Turmeric Benefits

Nature has such a plethora of herbs and plants that have been known by many cultures to have medicinal benefits. This post will share the health benefits of Turmeric and some recipes for how to use this powerful spice.

What is Turmeric

Turmeric is a perennial shrub that is grown in India and other tropical areas of Asia. It is a common spice used in Indian cuisine and has also been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. It has a bright yellow color and is pungent in taste. If you are pregnant consult with a doctor prior to including turmeric in your diet because it can act as a uterine stimulant.

Turmeric Recipes

Tumeric can be used either ground (where to buy) or in root form (where to buy). I like to just throw a piece of fresh turmeric in juice or smoothies. I also like to use it to season meat or as an ingredient in my Supercharged Egg Drop Soup recipe to give it the characteristic yellow color without using artificial dyes that are typically used. Another favorite of mine is to drink golden milk before bed which helps me sleep amazing. It is very easy to make and so delicious. Here is my recipe for golden milk.

Golden Milk

  • 8 ounces of milk (My favorite is homemade coconut milk!)
  • 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
  • dash of fresh ground pepper
  • dash of ground himalayan sea salt

Warm the milk in a saucepan on medium low heat. Add a dash of salt and pepper and ground turmeric and stir. Once warmed pour into a mug and enjoy! It is great for reducing inflammation and is used in many cultures to soothe the body for a good nights sleep. Here is another unique turmeric milk recipe you can try.
