Health Benefits of Wine

You know how it is! It’s been a long day, a longer week, people are driving you crazy (not to mention the kids!) and you need to unwind! If you are anything like me Wine-O-Clock rolls around before you know it. I LOVE wine. Mostly red, like a Malbec, Shiraz/Syrah or a Tempranillo. But If it’s a hot summer day maybe a chilled glass of Voignier. A few years ago I heard that wine had some health benefits but never did much research. Well, I finally did and am here to report back to you what I found! This post will share the health benefits of wine and why you shouldn’t feel guilty for poppin’ open a bottle! Cheers!

The History of Wine

Wine has been used for thousands of years as part of a healthy diet. The ancient Sumerians referred to it as man-made medicine and Hippocrates claimed it was good for disinfecting wounds and for symptoms of diarrhea and even lethargy. It has long been apart of celebrations, religious rituals and medicinal purposes in most cultures.

Wine is created when grapes are fermented and the yeast converts sugars into alcohol. It is grown in many regions all over the world from France, Italy, South America, Australia and California.

Health Benefits of Wine

Wine consumed in moderation is considered to have significant health benefits. For men this is considered no more than 3-4 units per day and for women no more than 2-3. It is important to avoid overconsumption which can have have detrimental effects on health and wellbeing.

Wine is high in antioxidants, such as resveratrol, that has many benefits. Research is showing that the antioxidants are responsible for the health benefits of wine such as:

  • Better Sleep
  • Increased Longevity
  • Inflammation
  • Lowers Cholesterol
  • Brain Health
  • Heart Health
  • Prevent Diseases
  • Prevent Sunburn
  • Improved Lung Function
  • Slow down aging process
  • Prevent depression
What an impressive list! Wine makes my heart happy, literally and figuratively, among other things. But again, only when consumed in moderation. The physical and mental health benefits of wine, when included into a healthy diet, can improve overall health and wellness. Research has shown that red wine can even fight cancer by preventing tumor initiation, promotion and progression.

One recommendation of mine is to try to consume organic wine whenever possible. Grapes are usually heavily sprayed with pesticides. Organic grapes will be healthier, have a bolder flavor and have increased health benefits compared to non-organic wine. Organic wine can be found at many wine stores, Trader Joe’s or you can order online here.

Do you celebrate Wine-O-Clock? Are you excited to learn about the health benefits of wine? I would love to hear from you!
