CBD is a hot topic right now and I get asked many questions about it’s benefits and uses. I wrote this post is to share with you the uses and benefits of CBD oil and whether or not you should try it for yourself.

Is CBD Marijuana?

The Marijuana plant contains both THC and CBD, and these two compounds have different effects. Until recently, the best-known compound in cannabis was delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This is the most active ingredient in marijuana. THC creates a mind-altering “high” when it is broken down by heat and introduced into the body. This results from smoking marijuana or using it in cooking, for example.

CBD is not psychoactive. This means that it does not change the state of mind of the person who uses it. CBD is one of many compounds, known as cannabinoids, in the cannabis plant. Researchers have been looking at the potential therapeutic uses of CBD. Oils that contain concentrations of CBD are known as CBD oils. The concentrations and the uses of these oils vary. Research shows that CBD products are actually helpful at reducing many ailments. Such diverse ailments that they seem to be unrelated, in fact… but they are not.

Emerging research shows that each of these ailments may be related to disregulation of the endocannabinoid system.  Have you ever heard of it? It’s not as familiar to us as the cardiovascular or immune system, but is a very critical component of the human body. The endocannabinoid system is possibly one of the most fascinating systems in the whole body. It was discovered through researching the effects of cannabis on the body. The endocannabinoid system is made up of endocannabinoids and their receptors. These are found everywhere in the body from the brain and other organs to glands and immune cells. The endocannabinoid system works differently in different parts of the body but the end goal is homeostasis, or internal balance. Have you ever heard of a “runner’s high”? Research reported in the Scientific American found endocannabinoids are largely responsible for this natural “hit” of euphoria that increases feelings of well-being and decreases the perception of pain.

In addition to the plant matter, Cannabidiol (CBD oil) is another way to affect this powerful body system as CBD does appear to produce significant changes in the body, and some research suggests that it has many medical benefits.

How to Use CBD Oil

CBD oil is most often used internally, through ingestion, but can also be applied topically in a salve or even bath bombs. Because CBD oil is a relatively new supplement, exact dosing isn’t well established. While more long-term studies are still needed, the oil has shown to be very safe, there is no established CBD “overdose” and there are very few, if any, side effects at any dosage.

When trying to find the right dosage, consider the following things:

  • Make sure you are purchasing a high quality oil from a reputable company. A higher quality oil means that it will be more bioavailable to the body, so a lower dose can be enough.
  • Begin with the recommended dosage on the bottle, especially if using preventatively.
  • Some people notice a change immediately, while others don’t notice any improvement for several weeks. If after several weeks there is still no change, increase the dosage.
  • As with most herbal supplements, a small dosage 3-4 times a day is usually more therapeutic and beneficial than one large dose.

***Note: Although CBD oil on its own is very safe, it may interact with medications, particularly opioids. Speak with your doctor if you’re concerned about interactions or if you are unsure about using CBD oil for your health. It can be tough to find a primary care doctor who understands alternative practices, but there are options like this service that pair you with a doctor who fits your lifestyle.

The Many Benefits of CBD

Chronic Pain & Inflammation:

CBD has many benefits for the body, particularly for inflammation which is why it is a wonderful natural alternative to over the counter pain relief medications. Authors of a study published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine found that CBD significantly reduced chronic inflammation and pain in some mice and rats. The researchers suggested that the non-psychoactive compounds in marijuana, such as CBD, could constitute a new treatment for chronic pain.

Reduce Oxidative Stress:

Oxidative stress is responsible for many of today’s ailments. Oxidative stress occurs when the body has too many free radicals and can’t keep up with neutralizing them (with antioxidants). This is more of a problem now than it was in the past because our environment is so much more toxic than it ever was. Studies show that CBD oil acts as an antioxidant and also found that CBD has neuroprotective qualities. CBD can help reduce neurological damage caused by free radicals.

Neurological disorders:

Authors of a 2014 review noted that CBD has anti-seizure properties and a low risk of side effects for people with epilepsy. Studies suggest that CBD may also treat many complications linked to epilepsy, such as neurodegeneration, neuronal injury, and psychiatric diseases. Another study, published in Current Pharmaceutical Design, found that CBD may produce effects similar to those of certain antipsychotic drugs, and that the compound may provide a safe and effective treatment for people with schizophrenia.

Cancer:

Authors of a review published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology found evidence that CBD significantly helped to prevent the spread of cancer. In addition, the researchers noted that the compound tends to suppress the growth of cancer cells and promote their destruction. The authors pointed out that CBD has low levels of toxicity and called for further research into its potential as an accompaniment to standard cancer treatments.

Promotes Healthy Weight:

Cannabidiol can help maintain healthy blood sugar, stimulates genes and proteins that helps break down fat, and increase mitochondria that helps burn calories. CBD also encourages the body to convert white fat to brown fat. White fat is the kind of fat we typically think of when we think about body fat. Brown fat is fat that is in small deposits that behaves differently than white fat. Brown fat is said to improve health by enhancing the bodies ability to burn white fat, create heat, and even regulate blood sugar.

Anxiety:

According to the review, CBD may reduce anxiety-related behaviors in people with conditions such as:

  • post-traumatic stress disorder
  • general anxiety disorder
  • panic disorder
  • social anxiety disorder
  • obsessive-compulsive disorder

The authors noted that current treatments for these disorders can lead to additional symptoms and side effects, which can cause some people to stop taking them. No further definitive evidence currently links CBD to adverse effects, and the authors called for further studies of the compound as a treatment for anxiety.

Acne:

Acne treatment is another promising use for CBD. The condition is caused, in part, by inflammation and overworked sebaceous glands in the body. A 2014 study published by the Journal of Clinical Investigation found that CBD helps to lower the production of sebum that leads to acne, partly because of its anti-inflammatory effect on the body. Sebum is an oily substance, and overproduction can cause acne. CBD could become a future treatment for acne vulgaris, the most common form of acne.

CBD for Children:

CBD is safe and has many benefits for children such as pediatric anxiety and insomnia, and even autism and seizures. If you are interested in the benefits of cannabanoids, but do not want to use CBD for whatever reason you can use Copaiba essential oil. This alternative actually contains more Beta Caryophyllene than CBD. The Beta Caryophyllene is the compound that activates cannabannoid receptors that calm the mind, and trigger a powerful natural response to inflammation. This essential oil is derived from the resin of the Brazilian Copaifera reticulata tree and creates a relaxing atmosphere when diffused or applied topically. You can purchase Copaiba by itself here, or along with the kit here.

CBD for Pets:

All mammals have an endocannabinoid system, CBD oil can have some of the same benefits for pets as it does for humans.

For cats and dogs in particular, CBD oil may help with:

  • excessive barking or crying
  • pets getting along with other pets
  • pain
  • relaxing pets before a trip to the vet
  • lack of appetite
  • separation anxiety

How to Use CBD Oil for Pets

There may be some trial and error in finding the right dosage for pets. Start with a low dose of 1 milligrams per 10 pounds of body weight and go up to 5 milligrams per 10 pounds of body weight if needed. A higher dose may be necessary for some ailments. A low dose 3-4 times a day is usually more therapeutic than one large dose.

My Experience with CBD Oil:

We have been using CBD in our household for a little over a year now. My husband and I have used it the most for everything from aches and pains, anxiety, to improve concentration and help aid with sleep. I have used with my kids when they aren’t feeling well and need to rest or at times when they have been very upset and out of sorts. It’s a favorite of mine to grab when I need to concentrate and focus, or if I am feeling anxious thoughts. In my experience the effects have been noticed quickly. I feel calmer, more relaxed and positive. After learning about all the other benefits I am excited to use CBD oil more in our daily life and to see how the positive effects it has on both our physical and emotional wellness. As with many wellness products, make sure you buy from a reputable company that follows ethical standards and practices. You want to avoid products that have been contaminated with GMO, toxic additives/fillers or other harmful ingredients. You can click here to see where I get my favorite CBD products. I especially love the roll-on and the peppermint tincture. I just add a dropper full under the tongue and let it sit for about 30 seconds. It’s a great way to easily help support my endocannabinoid system.
