I make most of my personal products, and mouthwash is no exception. It is crazy just how easy it is and you can add ingredients that will have many beneficial factors, especially compared to commercial brands and the chemicals they contain. This post will share with you my simple recipe for DIY mouthwash.
Toxins in Commercial Mouthwash
Many store bought mouthwash contains nasty chemicals, dyes and other harmful ingredients that can actually cause cause bed, gum disease and develop resistant strains of bacteria. As I have mentioned in other posts, many commercial products contain nasty ingredients that should be avoided and mouthwash is no different. Toxins to avoid in mouthwash include:
- Sodium Fluoride
- Formaldehyde
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
- Polysorbate
- Cetylpyridinium Chloride
- Benzalkonium Chloride
- Artificial Colors
- Artificial Sweeteners
These chemicals have been linked to many health problems such as cancer, neurological problems, respiratory problems and even cause environmental damage. It is best to choose natural mouthwash products that do not contain these harmful chemicals or make your own DIY Mouthwash. Here is my recipe for a super easy and immune boosting mouthwash recipe.
DIY Mouthwash Recipe
- 1 cup of Purified or Distilled Water
- ¼ tsp salt
- 5-7 drops of Thieves Essential Oil
- 4 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
- 2 drops of Lemon Essential Oil
- 1 tsp baking soda (where to buy)
- 1 tbs colloidal silver (where to buy)
- Glass bottle – essential oils can degrade plastic (where to buy)
I recommend this brand of essential oil
It is so easy to make this DIY mouthwash! Put the salt in the bottle, add the essential oils to the mixture, add the baking soda, water, colloidal silver and shake. BAM! Done! How easy is that! It takes maybe 30 seconds, tops! I recommend using this brand of essential oils for the best benefits, they can support both immune and oral health. I add the essential oils to the salt mixture before adding the water because it helps to keep the oils and water from separating (it will still happen a little bit). The colloidal silver is beneficial for immune support and is a great addition to the recipe. You can make a bottle and use it as needed and make a new batch quickly whenever you run out! Also, feel free to experiment and use different essential oils based on your liking.
