We experience many emotions every day, but many of us may not understand just how much our emotions can affect us in so many ways, both physically and mentally. The mind body connection is very strong whether or not we can see it. This post will share with you how our emotional health can affect our overall health and well-being and how you can manage your emotions naturally.

How Stress Affects Our Health

Having good emotional health means being aware of thoughts, feelings and behaviors. People who have good emotional balance have learned healthy ways to cope with the stress and problems that are a normal part of life. They feel good about themselves and have healthy relationships.

Many things that happen in life can disrupt emotional health and lead to strong feelings of sadness, stress or anxiety. These things include:

  • Losing or changing jobs
  • Having a child leave or return home
  • The death of a loved one
  • Getting divorced or married
  • Suffering an illness or an injury
  • Getting a job promotion
  • Experiencing money problems
  • Moving
  • Having a baby

Every emotional feeling you have – both good and bad, affects some part of your body, and stress can wreak absolute havoc on physical health. Poor emotional health can weaken your body’s immune system, making you more likely to get colds and other illnesses during emotionally difficult times. Additionally, when you are feeling stressed, anxious or upset, you may not take care of your health as well as you should. You may not feel like exercising, eating healthy or making healthy choices. Abuse of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs may also be a sign of poor emotional health.

Physical symptoms that can be associated with poor emotional health are:

  • Back pain
  • Change in appetite
  • Chest pain
  • Chronic aches and pains
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Dry mouth
  • Excess Sweating
  • Exhaustion
  • Headaches
  • Heart Palpitations
  • High blood pressure
  • Insomnia
  • Sexual problems
  • Shortness of breath
  • Stiff neck
  • Upset stomach
  • Weight gain or loss
