Do you wish you could grow your own foods but think that you don’t have the time, energy or space that a garden requires? I felt the same way and am so excited to begin urban gardening to teach my kids about gardening and growing their own food and to be able to eat locally grown produce that can help lower our grocery bill. The purpose of this post is to share with you tips for urban gardening in a small space and how to grow aeroponically.

Our Disconnection with Food

As a culture we have become so disconnected with our food. This leads to mindless eating such as the over consumption of processed foods, health problems, obesity, etc.

Backyard gardening can help inspire you to take an interest in the origins of your food and make better choices about what you put on your plate. It is a great way to help you eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and perfect if you have picky eaters. You decide what kinds of fertilizers and pesticides come in contact with your food, or that don’t. It lets you control when to harvest your food. Vegetables that ripen in the garden have more nutrients than some store-bought vegetables that must be picked early because you can eat them at their peak instead of getting them as their nutrients deplete daily.

For me personally, I have not had much success with gardening. All goes well for a few weeks, but after awhile I get busy and forget to give TLC to my plant friends, mainly because they aren’t as vocal as kids and dogs when they need to be taken care of, I get distracted and everything ends up dying. I recently found a great solution and my whole family loves it! It’s called Aeroponic gardening and it’s perfect for urban gardening, especially in small spaces! We have a small patio area and this option is perfect for people who have space restrictions, it also eliminates the need for weeding, tilling and watering. Aeroponics is also a smarter choice environmentally because it requires only 10% the space and as little as 2% of the water as traditional growing methods use to grow 30% more and three times as fast.

Benefits of Aeroponic Gardening:

  • Delivers nutrients directly to the plant roots
  • Completely programmable technology conserves energy
  • Closed-loop system conserves water
  • Conserves water through runoff absorption into roots
  • Moisture control for better plant growth
  • Crops are easier to harvest in the absence of soil
  • Higher density crops optimizes output
  • Reduce labor cost through automation
  • Produces higher quality food in a controlled environment
  • Reduced risk of disease and pest infestation in a controlled environment
  • No need to immerse immerse roots in water which offers more control
  • Roots are provided with better exposure to oxygen
  • Produces more food with less effort

My Aeroponic Gardening Experience:

As I mentioned before, when it comest to gardening I have a bit of a brown thumb. My intentions are good, but at this point in my life, I don’t have much time for all the effort and energy that comes with gardening. Yet, as a health advocate I am passionate about the benefits of growing your own food. Also, as a homeschooling mom, I know how important it is to teach my kids about nutrition and want to create a closer connection with the foods we eat. What I love most about the TowerGarden is that it makes it so easy to grow your own food! It’s set to a timer so I don’t have to worry about watering it. It doesn’t contain soil so I don’t have to worry about weeding anything and it saves so much water. The reservoir holds a good amount a water and recycles itself so it uses 90% less water than conventional gardening! The nutrients (calcium, magnesium, other essential minerals) help everything to grow so much faster too!

After doing some assessment into how we could reduce our grocery budget and reduce food waste I discovered that we throw away lots of veggies and greens each month and I felt that this was a perfect way to have a garden we can easily manage, the kids can get to grow their own foods which excites them and makes them more inclined to eat more veggies and we are saving money! It’s a Win/Win! I have had my eye on a Tower Garden for a few years now and finally decided the time was right to invest in one for my family. I couldn’t be happier. And in a few weeks we will be adding to our Tower Garden family with another one to grow even more food! It’s so easy! I set it up in about 20 minutes (without my husband! I was so proud!) I setup a timer and it completely waters itself! No more forgetting and drying up my entire garden. We have an abundance of lettuce and greens daily and the garden is just starting! I can’t wait for the tomatoes to take off! And I love the sound of the Tower Garden when it waters itself. Just like a peaceful waterfall!

Check me out on Instagram to watch my Tower Garden updates including my IG stories where I usually have videos on how my garden is growing, harvesting and making yummy meals, etc. If you are thinking of getting a Tower Garden for yourself you can find more info here or you can email me directly to ask any questions!
