Homemade Enchilada Sauce Recipe

I love Mexican food, and I mean LOOOOOOOVVVEEEEE. Growing up in San Diego has been the perfect place with access to amazing Mexican restaurants, and of course in my quest to become a real foodie I enjoy making my own healthy recreations. Enchiladas are a favorite of my family and once I realized how easy it was to make your own homemade enchilada sauce we will never purchase store bought again. Awhile back I posted how to make a salsa verde sauce which you can read HERE. This post is a version of red enchilada sauce that is simple and delicious.

Homemade Enchilada Sauce

  • Chopped garlic- 2-3 cloves
  • 1/2 Chopped white onion
  • 1 Diced tomatoes
  • 1-1 1/2 cups broth- preferably homemade (RECIPE)
  • Ground Cumin
  • Chili Powder or Paprika
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Flour
  • Olive Oil

Warm a pan with 2Tbs of olive oil on medium heat. Add garlic and onion and sautee adding tomatoes a few minutes later. Season with salt and pepper and add some cumin and chili powder. If serving to kids I will either substitute chili powder with paprika or do a mixture of both so it is not too spicy. You can season according to your taste. Add 1 to1 1/2 cups of broth depending how much sauce you want to make. Turn stove to low and let sauce simmer until tomatoes break up. Add small amounts of flour to thicken up the  enchilada sauce according to your desired consistency. Let sauce cook about 20 minutes and pour over enchiladas or even an enchilada casserole.

This enchilada sauce was so simple and delicious. I love being able to make healthy homemade foods without having to sacrifice taste. Knowing it was made with the best ingredients is the cherry on top!

Have you made your own enchilada sauce? We would love for you to share your recipes and experiences!
