If you have been following me for awhile you know that I love adding probiotic foods to our meals as often as I can. This is one of my favorite recipes because it is so easy to make and can be added to just about anything. Fermented foods have numerous benefits for overall health and wellness, which you can read about here. Homemade Probiotic Onions are a great and simple way to get beneficial bacterias into your diet on a regular basis. Here is my recipe for homemade probiotic onions.

Homemade Probiotic Onions

How to Make:

Place the sliced onions in a bowl and sprinkle with salt and massage the salt into the onions. Place into a jar and add water until you get to the top of the jar and use the fermentation weight to keep the onions submerged under the water to keep from molding. Cover the jar with a paper towel and secure with a rubber band. Leave for 7 days to culture and build up that beneficial bacteria that is so good for us! You will see lots of bubbles in the jar letting you know it’s working! After the 7 days you an remove the paper towel and the weight, place a lid on the jar and keep in your refrigerator for up to 6 months, if it lasts that long! I love to add this to sandwiches or burgers or even in a salad. They are so yummy and delicious and just one tablespoon is the equivalent to an entire bottle of probiotics!

1. Makeup

This is a source of many toxins and chemicals that affect women and young girls. Sadly many makeup companies PinkWash, meaning they capitalize on promoting for breast cancer awareness for marketing, but they don’t do much about the harmful chemicals in their makeup that research is showing is a main cause of many health problems that are arising. 2. Personal Products
Us ladies like to pamper ourselves and because of there is a plethora of personal products for us to choose from makeup removers to body lotion to shampoo and conditioner. Unfortunately many of them have one thing in common, they are all loaded with harmful chemicals that wreck havoc on our body and our endocrine system Research is showing that many of these products contain toxins that cause hormone imbalance, skin disorders and even cancer. 3. Scented Products – What woman doesn’t like fresh, floral and pretty scents. Unfortunately these scents contain Phthalates which have been shown by research to negatively effect the endocrine system. When you see fragrance listed on the label, don’t be fooled. This is a catch-all term that can actually stand for thousands of different ingredients (literally, at least 3,000). When you use a product containing “fragrance” or “parfum,” all of those mysterious ingredients are absorbed right into your bloodstream. These ingredients are predominantly made from chemicals and are completely toxic for your health in so many ways. Scented products contain carcinogens, allergens, neuro-toxic chemicals, and respiratory irritants. Artificial scents are typically found in lotions, shampoo, candles, dyer sheets, laundry detergent, cleaners and air fresheners and many other personal and household products. How to avoid these toxins: Many of my favorite scented candles and fragrance lotions and sprays got replaced with simple homemade alternatives. I naturally scent my house using therapeutic grade essential oils in the diffuser and make also use them to make my own candles and other scented products. Cleaning Products – Chemicals in cleaners foam, bleach, and disinfect to make our dishes, bathtubs and countertops gleaming and germ-free, they are also contributing to indoor air pollution, are poisonous if ingested, and can be harmful if inhaled or touched. In fact, some cleaners are among the most toxic products found in the home. Cleaning products were responsible for nearly 10% of all toxic exposures reported to U.S. Poison Control Centers. Cleaning ingredients vary in the type of health hazard they pose. Some cause acute, or immediate, hazards such as skin or respiratory irritation, watery eyes, or chemical burns, while others are associated with chronic, or long-term, effects such as cancer. In addition, most ingredients in chemical cleaners break down into harmless substances during treatment or soon afterward. 5. Plastic & Canned Products – For more than 40 years, BPA has been widely used in consumer products to prevent corrosion and breakages, preserving the food inside. This toxin is found in many plastic products such as water bottles, food packaging and canned items. A study published in the journal Environmental Research reveals that consuming canned foods can expose our bodies to BPA and the dangers it can cause. BPA can hack and disrupt the normal responses of hormones in the body. For instance, it can mimic the effects of estrogen. In doing so, it can reprogram cells, causing a plethora of health problems. BPA exposure is associated with many adverse health effects including diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, reproductive development issues, amongst others. How to avoid these toxins: Avoid plastic as much as possible. They make great glass water bottles and choose products that use glass packaging instead of plastic. Replace canned foods with fresh or dried alternatives or choose products that use BPA free lining in cans.

If you have tried to change to natural deodorants with no success than this you post is for you! I hear many stories from people and their continuous failed attempts at finding a natural deodorant that actually works for them. I myself struggles with this problem for years until I learned what my body needed to make the transition work. This post will share with you how to do an underarm detox and why you should do one!

My  Natural Deodorant Struggle

I began my quest for natural deodorant over a decade ago! I tried my fair share of natural deodorant brands and even tried my own recipes in search for a more natural alternative to deodorants. The more I talked to others who were on the same quest, I learned that many of them had the same struggle as I had. I began to research the problem more and found out was very interesting and insightful so of course I had to try it out for myself first!

What I Learned

If you have been using conventional deodorants or antiperspirants for years, a lot has been absorbed into the skin. Once you stop using the chemicals, there are toxins that have to leave the body first and allow you to make a fresh start.

When making the transition from conventional deodorants to more natural ones, many experience the occurrence of uncomfortable rash or excessive sweating and odor which makes them think the natural products don’t work. But, in most cases, what might be missing is just a successful armpit detox.

Commercial deodorants often contain potentially harmful compounds that could damage your health. The research on this is ongoing, but a mere look at the list rings alarm bells such as the neurotoxin that may be contained in your deodorant.

Make sure to check the labels for yourself when buying a deodorant. Here are just a few example of what is lurking in store-bought deodorants and antiperspirants that could be causing harm to your body:

Aluminum – Linked it to Breast Cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
Parabens – Hormone Disruptor; traces have been found in breast cancer tissue.
Formaldehyde – Carcinogenic substance.
Phthalates – Hormone disruptor; linked to infertility.
Antibacterial Substances – Negative effect on the immune system function and affects hormonal balance. The FDA recently came out and is banning many of these substances
Propylene glycol – AKA Antifreeze. GROSS!

Putting all these potentially toxic substances where they can be easily absorbed into the blood stream does not seem like such a great idea. In addition, there are lymph nodes in your armpits and around the neck, which play an important role in fighting off disease. So, loading them up with toxins  can be causing hormonal imbalance and can seriously affect the body’s immune response.

A detox for your underarms is highly recommended as a great way to help remove those impurities and toxins that are being stored in the body, which will allow your natural deodorant to work effectively.

How To Do an Underarm Detox

Ingredients:

  1. Mix the clay and apple cider vinegar.  It should be a smooth consistency like sour scream. Add in 3 drops of your favorite citrus essential oil. I like to use Purification by Young Living for its detoxifying benefits. Use a glass bowl for mixing and a wooden or non-metal spoon (avoid metal).
  2. Spread a thin layer of this mixture on your armpit and leave it on for 20 minutes.
  3. If you feel any pain, remove the mix immediately. Some redness is normal, as the blood flow to the area is increased, but it usually disappears within 15 minutes or so.
  4. Remove the mask gently with a washcloth and have a warm shower.
  5. Repeat this detox every other day until you can see that the body has adjusted to the natural deodorant and the unpleasant odor is gone. Allow at least a week for your underarm detox to work and don’t let some initial discomfort deter you and leer you back to commercial deodorants. This transition phase is temporary as the body is re-adjusting to more natural products.

Additional Helpful Tips

  • Drink plenty of water to further stimulate the cleansing process.
  • Try dry brushing your skin – this will improve lymph and blood circulation. Dry brushing involves using a dry brush to brush the skin in a particular pattern. You start from your feet and make your way up. Use long circular movements in the direction of the center of the body, towards your heart. When brushing armpits, use circular clockwise motions.
